Well, as this is the first year I wasn’t rushing home from the office to deal with getting ready- I must say it was far more pleasant..
Pumpkin disemboweled- check..
Costumes ready- check
Chili and cornbread done- check.
I have no idea why chili and cornbread became the traditional meal for Halloween- probably because I could throw it in the crock pot at 5AM and get home to get them fed, dressed and out the door prior to the sugar high.
The Hurricane is a nasty bloody ghoul –he’s going through that 10 year old boy gross stage. Miss Thing is The Pirate Queen. No wench action or such here- as she put it “I’m the bitch in charge”.. I can live with that.
Me I’m the Mom in the car waiting to get home so she can sit down and have a nice glass of wine..
Y’all have a fun an spooky evening!!!!!

Disembowled pumpkins...dammit, I knew I forgot something....
It's always something, isn't it??
I just can't focus on disembowling pumpkins, when there is chili and cornbread to be had..
Happy Halloween dora!
I actually make some damn good chili, and cornbread that would make you smack yer mamma for seconds for ;) Old fashioned in an iron skillet kind- with white cornmeal, thank you very much.
And a Happy All Hallows Eve to you Mr. President! If I ask ever so sweetly may I be Secretary of Protocol in the Sling Administration?
Sounds like the nicest time evuh!
I didn't do any of it. Straight from office to the son's football game. They won - in a fantastic way in the last few seconds. So that was good. We took him to dinner, my neurotic dog survived halloween without us, and now it's November.
Teen Demon was a pirate, too - she worked, so no "tricker treating" (as my sis & I used to call it), but they dressed up for work. I like the "bitch in charge", ha! She sounds like a firecracker.
Your chili sounds that way as well!
Hat- in truth it was one of the most pleasant ones we've had..
CB- She's a piece of work, no doubt about it.. I do a vegetarian version for my non carnivore friends too ;) and yeah, actually it is damn fine. I've been working on it for 25 years or more after all.
Oh, and fun it was. Yours sounded grand. I think it's a hoot that you call it pumpkin disembowlement. Someone with too much time to spare advised us to save the seeds and toast them.
Hah! If it's not boxed, I'm not microwaving it.
The last comment made me laugh, because we've still got a huge bowl of pumpkin seeds sitting in the fridge that we were going to toast "later". Teen Demon carved a couple of pumpkins before Halloween as decorations for a school dance. Needless to say, no one has gotten 'round to the toasting. Crap. I don't know why I even tried to fool myself with that, ha!
I think chili and cornbread just became my halloween dinner de rigeur. :-)
Chili in the crock pot does sound like a new tradition in the making here too. And Pumpkin seeds.... when I was a dewey-eyed young mom I did do that. The truth of it was that the kids loved the idea of it but the final product, not so much.
Here's another mom-barometer (or Momometer?). What's the longest you've let your pumpkins sit on the porch after Halloween? Have you reached fuzzy, black, faces caving in on themselves? Sad to say, I have. I'll try to do better this year.
Ms. P- Nice to hear from you sister! The entire pumpkin seed thing to me is way to much effort for way too little payback in my opinion.. There are many nice people that sell them, and that doesn't require me cleaning the bloody things!
Kimberly Ann- It works for some strange reason, it really does.
Elizabeth- That sucker is gone the following day. Of course I'm lazy, I pick it up walk about 25 yards and pitch that sucker into the woods and let the critters have at it.. Pitiful, aren't I?
What a wonderful, traditional sounding Halloween. Crisp fall air and piping hot chili. Just lovely.
I went to a fun party on a rooftop in the Hollywood Hills and then hoofed my way along Santa Monica Boulevard. Never saw so many Amy Winehouses, but then again rehab is the new black.
ooh, yum! chili and cornbread sounds perfect for halloween!
i did nothing to celebrate. don't even have any porch pumpkins this year. the no sleep thing really got to me. always next year, hope anyway.
